If you are a beginner, I recommend the DCR-SR42. It is extremely easy to use. It has an incredible amount of movies and 40x zoom is amazing. It has very good video and sound quality. I got mine on eBay for $ 450 The only thing I do not like is the battery. You would be wise to buy an additional extended battery for it.

Hi all, I had an old camcorder was stolen because we had a burglary ii 2000 (luckily it was only stolen!) Anyway, we still have two tapes from that which is pretty big and would not fit into my current cam recorder (they are almost twice as much) I was wondering, is there anyway I could get "data" on the old tapes for the "new" bands? Maybe in a camcorder business? Just ask at this first as I dont want to go into the store to be told no! haha Thanks for your help PS bands are Sony (old) if that helps
sony never made VHS-c, so they would be either Video8 or Betamax. Most places that process photographic film even old videotape transfer to DVD. Video8 would be no problem, but Betamax can be hard to find.

I am in getting an HD camcorder in the next few weeks and im not sure what spec. I will be looking for when looking for HD camcorders. I will be getting some professional use out of your camcorder. With the problems associated with hard drive-based camcorder - it is known that they can not handle vibrations (loud music, high crouds, noisy engines, noisy something), has high altitude (low barometric pressure will cause the disk heads to remain parked) problems of 9800 feet, data recovery issues (non-removable memory), additional steps to make data file archives, hard disk camcorders are generally not recommended - and are not typically used by real professionals. Flash memory and MiniDV tape does not share the problems HDD camcorders have. Flash memory uses AVCHD compression - one in its current implementation, this is very slowing. Hopefully camcorder manufacturers solve this. HD video cameras are all the rage in the new millennium. Although prices may be higher than standard definition camcorders, consumers are still buying these cameras from market. The Story HD camcorders
HDV (High Definition Video) format developed by JVC, Sony Corporation, Canon Inc. and Sharp Corporation. The major investors at the time were JVC and Sony. You can say that these four companies were the first companies to offer consumer HD camcorders. Today, there are other firms which also makes HDV hardware products, other than Sharp.

Pal Hi8 recorded tapes - need to play here in the U.S.?
Hi I have just sent some old tapes I recorded at 97 on my Sony camcorder UK. I now lives in the U.S. and no longer have the camcorder. If I buy a Samsung SLC810 Hi8 camcorder, which says it played in PAL or NTSC multi-system - I will be able to play these tapes is really important to me? I do not want to send the tape anywhere to be converted incase they lose or damage them. If anyone knows another camera or another option so let me know. Samsung sales brochure states it can play in PAL for people on vacation in Europe. My understanding is that an NTSC camera Recording in a different format and can not read the PAL format to play it again, although motif searching?

What I want to know is whether these 2 different functions work independently or dependantly from each other? Are there camcorders that come with both high and low optical zoom digital zoom at the same time? Or has a high optical zoom inevitably impose the camera with a high digital zoom? And if it is sad but true case, can the digital zoom is deactivated during shooting, leaving active only the optical zoom so that the zoom is optical instead digital, in order to capture a clear and well defined picture, instead of a fuzzy, pixel images? Similarly, just for knowledge purposes, can the optical zoom be deactivated simultaneously active only digital zoom?

I want to transfer some of the shows and movies that I have on my DVR to my Sony Digital 8 camcorder?
via firewire its a motorla dvr 5 months on and I have Cox Communications. it has 2 FireWire ports on the back, and I got the correct cable to match the port and I tried to connect the camera to the I had the camera on VCR and it was not anything on the LCD screen! I tried the other port still nothing! I thought it would be so easy. the maual that came with said that it is just for audio and video equipment, a camcorder is perfect for it! is it possible that the port isn't active yet, though I think its supposed there is somethig wrong im doing? I just thought what I had on TV that it would be on the LCD screen on the camera. or maybe the only one to upload video to the DVR from your camera?

Why can not I get my laptop to find my video camera via an IEEE 1394 FireWire connection? I'm going crazy!

I will try to get a USB connector. You can problably find one online, Yahoo, Walmart, etc. When you connect your video camera up, it pops up as a unit. So I would take the footage and put it into Windows Movie Maker.
