Hello. Also I am glad to have a camcorder, and has done a lot of research lately. Panasonic comes out with a really good 3CCD cam DVD next month (VDR-D310) which records to dual layer discs. This means you can put 30 or so minutes of the best quality video on a dual layer mini DVD. If you purchased a standard DVD camcorder that records in the usual mini-DVD's, you will only get around 18 minute high quality video. It did not quite double, but 30-35 minutes is better than 18! I shoule mention, however, that mini-DVD's are more expensive than the mini DV tape. There is also a hard drive cams which can accommodate around 7 hours of best quality video, depending on the size of your hard disk. Some say that the quality is not as good as mini DV, but others say that regular people like you and me, we will not notice the difference. You can record your footage right to a DVD when it is connected to a DVD burner. But if you plan to do something about editing of your video due to compression of going back and forth from camera to computer to DVD, you will lose some quality in the video, so it is best you go with a Mini DR. Someone knows something about the mini DV tape??

I'm considering buying VP-D361/XEU Samsung Ultra Compact Digital MiniDV, but it does not use memory short, only "mini dv tape." Does anyone know if they are any good, or you can delete video files from them, saying if you have recorded something that is not worth to preserve. I could really do with some advice, thanks guys ...

I have a mini DV camera, and the only way to delete is to incorporate the above, or perhaps you can edit via the computer if you buy the firewire to connect it. I personally would go with one that takes a map. My husband thought it was what he got, but they handed him the wrong box, and we did not realize it until it was too late. Oh well

MiniDV: Since its launch in 1966 MiniDV has become the standard format for consumer and semi-professional camcorder users and is still the standard by which other formats evaluated. MiniDV tapes use roughly the same size as a box of matches. This has enabled camcorder manufacturers over the years to reduce the size of video cameras to their existing "pocket size".

The DV signal is transmitted via the DV-out port, also known as a FireWire port, or IEEE1394, and also as i.Link and associated to the computer with a FireWire cable. Virtually all MiniDV camcorders have a DV-out port and a better quality of them will have a DV-in port for transfer of edited footage back to the camcorder. Although other formats are more popular MiniDV still has plenty of life ahead of them yet, and camcorders are good value for money.

DVD: DVD is growing in popularity, and invokes a greater share of the market, since it was introduced in mid 2001. The main advantage of DVD camcorders is convenience. Record your footage on the disc, remove it and play it on your DVD player without cables or connectors.

DVD camcorders use 8 cm discs in a variety of recordable formats. DVD-R is a single using the disc compatible with all DVD players and used by all camera manufacturers. DVD-RAM is a rewritable disc, which offers in-camera editing and supported by Hitachi and Panasonic. DVD-/ + RW is a second rewriteable format and is supported by Sony.

HDD: Hard disk drive is the latest format to be used in camcorders. Originally introduced by JVC, but now supported by other manufacturers. Hard drives are currently as large as 30GB and can store 35 hours of standard recording mode and up to seven hours at best quality.

Hard drive camcorders are yet to match the quality of MiniDV but their performance is impressive, and undoubtedly will be even better. With almost no moving parts, HDD camcorders are very compact and could well replace miniDV as primary format.

One obvious not with HDD camcorders is when the hard disk is full recordings are retrieved or overwritten. It may not be a big problem unless you're on vacation for some time and away from your computer.

Memory: Camcorder manufacturers have made a digital stills function with their camcorders some time now. The stills are recorded on a memory of the one or the other, which fits into a slot in the camcorder. Cameras are now offered to record video to memory card
