Is it legal to have a video camera running in my car to record my travels? I am in Massachusetts?
I bought a new HD camcorder and windshield mount. I would like to have it installed and running while driving, but do not know if it is legal. I bet it is, but this is Massachusetts and all this gives no sense, so I thought I would ask.
If you really want to know, contact your local or state law enforcement. It is likely legal - but it can not be legal, is how you mount camcorder - If the windshield is mounted, which could obstruct the driver's vision - and it would not be lawful. It is not that there is a video camera blocking the view, but that there is * anything * in the windshield area to prevent the driver's vision. Mount the camera in another place, so it is not impeded the driver's vision (using a head-rest mount or something similar) and you should be good to go. This issue is up there with "Is talking on a cell phone be illegal? "My opinion is that if the driver is distracted, it's illegal. Whether this is a distraction from a cell phone, texting, shaving, reading a book or apply makeup or what is the problem - just because it is a distraction from a cell phone makes it not a "different" distraction ... It is a distraction, and driver can not be distracted when driving the vehicle. In your case, the camcorder is not the illegal part - that it (or a GPS or cell phone mount or what) is mounted on the windshield and the driver's line instead of from the outside through the windscreen, it * must * be illegal ... If the camera is small enough to fit between the mirror and windshield, so do not block the driver's field vision out the front windshield, so you should be good to go.

- Bland still shots, narration, and other content with your in-car video, especially for trips or holidays drives. Video is just another media to highlight your experience.
- Capture the atmosphere to get in a small town or a great landscape when topping a hill. This is why it is important to keep your record on which you never know when a big scene will look like.
- Enjoy your driving, this means not having to look for a place to pull over to create a still shot, not to be distracted by the video camera (which would be dangerous while driving) and not worry about missing some breathtaking views (as has been captured).
