Canon VIXIA HV30 High-Definition MiniDV Camcorder

Canon Vixia High Definition Camcorder Hv30 Canon Vixia High Definition Camcorder Hv30

The Canon HV40 is a MiniDV-based camcorder, which belongs to the company's Vixia line of High Definition (HD) video cameras. It is one of the few camcorders that use miniDV cassette from any manufacturer that released in 2009. But it gives only small improvements to its predecessor, the HV30. Thus, apart from a few design changes and adding of native progressive 24p mode, HV40 is almost the same as the HV30.

Canon HV40 has low noise and robust saturation. Its 10x zoom lens is equipped with a auto coverage, and it works properly in poor lighting conditions. Its manual controls offers multiple scene modes, image effects and white balance. It offers a good selection of options for frame rate and it provides high definition and standard definition video recording capabilities. The buttons can easily access, and its battery has a good battery life.

However, the design of the Canon HV40 is bulky and awkward. Its pictures are not as sharp as Canon HF HF S10 and S11, and it has only average color accuracy. It's not a full manual mode, and photos can be stored in a miniSD card instead of the more familiar SD / SDHC card.

The Canon HV40 is cheaper than the Panasonic HDC-TM300, but the latter camera has more features and has a more comfortable grip. The TM300 is also easier to use for beginners, and it has a lens ring, and more manual controls, are not available in the HV40.

Compared with its cousin, the HF-S100, the HV40 is slightly cheaper, but HF-S100 has better performance and features, apart from the fact it uses flash memory instead of tape. On the other hand, HF-S100 is not equipped with a native 24p mode, and it does not have a viewfinder.

In conclusion, satisfies the HV40 requirements for those who still prefer to work with videotape. It may also be preferable than flash-memory models, if price is an important consideration. But, to get a cheaper HV30 may be a better choice if native 24p mode is not necessary.
