When you get to buy a new 32 "widescreen TV, new terms being thrown around as they go out of fashion! Discover what they all mean saving you from making a costly purchase mistake.
So here for your viewing pleasure (maybe!) Have a list of functions called usually conducted by manufacturers of modern TV.
- HD - High Definition. Bigger, faster, better than the old-Telly, right?
- HD Ready - An indicator that the television are capable of the lowest high-resolution standard. This is often referred to as 720p, see below about what this means in itself.
- Full HD - A higher resolution than the 720p standard, supported by many of the newer 32-inch widescreen tvs. This can be either 1080i or 1080p, again see below for these definitions.
- HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) - A connection standard. This is one of the ways to get a signal to your TV from other sources such as DVD, set-top boxes and Blu-ray players. This connection standard defines what cables you need and provide a better quality digital connection than earlier types of cables and SCART. Some TV manufacturers are using this connection all home devices to be controlled by a handset - so the more you have, the less chance there is of being caught!
- Dynamic contrast - a LCD TVs can display a range of brightness from bright to dark, but the maximum available in most units is a series of 1:1000 (the lightest is 1000 times brighter than the darkest). Unfortunately the human eye can handle a much larger area (something like 1:20,000) and then television pictures do not look as rich as the real thing. Manufacturers are trying To get around this by working out, if the picture is mostly bright (or mostly dark) and move their 1:1000 "window" of the brightness up or down, the larger scale. This helps to produce better outcomes for the human eye.
- High Refresh Rate - An LCD display has a need for the image being sent to the many times a second to get the appearance of a moving image. The problem comes when the "pixels" which represent the image fade very slowly compared to how the image changing. It gives a kind of blur. Monitors with high refresh rate has pixels to turn on and off very quickly, helping to eliminate this problem.
- High Framerate - Related to the previous point. An image is usually only updated 50 times per second (or 50Hz) on the screen. For fast motion, this can mean to a ball (for example) has led many pixels in the time in between - to give a jerky feel to the flow. TV's offer a high framerate try to cheat this limitation of the signal. They slide extra frames in between the normal 50 and a second smart calculate where the ball has gone halfway between the normal framework.
- DVB-T - To open-air broadcast television channels. This will replace the standard antenna-based channels - but still contains all the channels that most people are accustomed to, while expanding choice.
- FreeSat - equivalent to Freeview. FreeSat delivers the signal via a satellite dish and this is an extra cost of creating this kind of television. True High Definition channels are already being sent through this method.
- Optical Audio Output - A way to get the audio signal from your TV to a larger home-entertainment system. Audio purists will use this method to have a very clean signal.
- 720p - The lowest HD standard. Provides a screen that is 1280x720 pixels (it will say that the height of the image is 720 pixels). "P" stands for "progressive". This means that the image is built in a continuous stream of pixels from top to bottom, one line at a time without gaps between
- 1080p - seen as Full HD. In this case, the image 1920x1080 pixels. "P" version is the same as 720p. If you see 1080i, this means "interlaced". This works just like an old-fashioned television, where every second line is sent to the screen, then the other is sent, interleaving with the first. Your eyes see this as a flat image, but many see it as an inferior standard image to 1080p
- LED TV - These newer models are actually still LCD TV, but they use white LED light to shine through the LCD to provide illumination. They bring significant power savings and improving local contrast screens. They are also thinner than the normal 32 inch widescreen television.
- OLED TV - Very rare in the past. These are true LED-based television, where each pixel is actually an LED, which can turn on or off for themselves. They provide extremely high contrast level, and even more power savings.
