What is the best type of camera to a high school filmmaker?
I'm looking for a kind of camera to use in your basic low-budget, low exposure students films. While I have some basic knowledge of digital media, I really do not know much about specific cameras. It need not be fancy, a video camera type most likely enough, but I want quality to be at least a step above the normal "July 4th BBQ 'family home video. I've had some experience with the Sony Handycam series, and it seems pretty cool for the money, but is there anything better? Is there a type that is better than Handycam in the same price range? Will I be able to record directly to DVD / Memory Stick, and be able to jump Hi8 tape? Someone I can get for under 500 USD? Any help is much appreciated.
Hitachi makes a DVD unit Any $ 400 Mini-DV will allow you to transfer to computer via FireWire from the tape. That is cheapest I've seen is $ 280
