High def camcorder ......... Plz read on!?
I am thinking of buying a Sony HDR-HC9E HDV (mini DV) camcorder, but I need a special DVD burner to make high def DVDs, or can I just compress the clips to normal DVD? Also, I need high def mini tape or normal dv fine? Would you recommend a high-def mini dv camera? Thank you very much
a lot of good questions. actual HD is not really a product ready for consumer market. if you intend making DVDs as the final product, they can be obtained from miniDV including widescreen versions. from HD will not really make a difference. Saving and Editing HD material is also a largely unresolved problem. How will you watch HD content? if you DTV? the camcorder is the only way you have to play out HD? If so then you can edit a program that can be loaded back to your camcorder (for playback) into a format for the camcorder can read? saving on HD DVD-ROM is not a practical idea. a DVD will save less than 4 GB of data. It is less than 20 minutes of HDV data. Of course this can be further compressed, but then it will not play in HDV camcorders. Revision is not easy in an MPEG2-HD format, HDV itself probably has the greatest support. As for tape, miniDV tape is HDV tape. if you buy from the corner store, would I only buy tape labeled HDV simply because that assures you it is relatively new tape stock. ties are improved, a dropout with miniDV is a small glitch, but with HDV it may be a train wreck. HDV will likely drive the market to develop common HD systems, but it is still unresolved, even at this point. remember, while DV was developed to replace VHS / Video 8 market, it never came to be home VCR and movie player, because it was overshadowed by the DVD. It is very possible that new technology HD devices, perhaps TiVo such as video servers, will be the next Video Home Companion.
