On a Canon HG-21, what does the flashing red light when charging means and how do I fix it?

I recently bought a used, but fully functioning Canon Vixia HG-21 HD camcorder from B & H in New York City. I bought a battery to go with it and it works fine. AC adapter cord thing also powers camera fine, but when I try to charge the battery with wire, charging flashes red instead of solid red. The instruction says that there is a problem. Can anyone help me please? I also bought the battery at B & H and it is the same type, just larger than the Canon battery that came with your camera

The flashing red charging light indicates that power charging adapter is faulty or the battery is defective (page 104 in manual). You have not indicated that you purchased the battery form B & H, but the battery may not be compatible with the in-camera charging. Canon makes a separate battery charger: Model CG-800 and charges Li-Ion 800 Series batteries. It might be worth getting one so you do not always have to connect your cam whenever you need to charge it up. But separate charger can not solve the problem if the battery itself is the problem. How do I get my Canon HV20 to have that "cinematic" look?

I know I know, stupid right. I just started to take the whole movie thing and I wanted to know how you get to see. I tried to put it to cinemode spots, but it looks pretty much the same. I hear someone talk about shutter speed but I dont know how to do it on the camcorder. I've seen a lot of test shots, and none look like mine, some are using adapters and filters, but I've seen some not, and it looks great. Can someone help me out here? Thank you!

Well, it's a good thing, you have HV20, cuz it's the perfect camera for you ... And yes, I have heard that also on "Cine" mode, but much doubt that makes the difference. It might help a bit well ... I recommend that you use 24P mode (go into the menu to the camera setup for HDV 24p). 24 Progressive scan is a feature that allows hard unpleasing video a smooth feel, similar to that on film ... it is a must in professional cameras to indie filmmakers, and I think the HV20 is one of the only consumer cameras that have it ... Mind you might be a little hard to edit, depeding of the program you use, so you might want to experiment before you do anything important ..... Oh, and shutter speed can help a little bit ... Film has a shutter speed of 1 / 48 of a second, I do not remember whether or not the HV20 can do it ... I know it is a 1 / 60 and a 1/30...not safe 1/48...1/48 of a second will give your video a sort of subtle veil more like movies. You can also buy a DOF adapter (but it is expensive) to get a narrow DOF, a selevtive focus, so to speak, which allows you to manipulate what the frame is in focus .... Or you can simulate that by zooming all the way and open the iris to the max aperture (eg F2 or something) .. Just be careful, it will be difficult to keep solid. filters? yes, I think some Neutral Density filters can help ... ND filters just make the image darker without compromising resolution or color, so theoretically, it would allow you to get a better DOF outdoors by allowing you to open your iris more. (it will compensate for the increased amount of light you let into the lens by opening the iris, if you choose to manipulate the DOF, as explained in the previous section) Hope that helps:)

I know that this question has probably been asked a thousand times, but would it would hurt to ask one more? I'm choosing between these two pocket camcorders. I would also like to know which is better in low light situations and have better video quality, etc. I'm kinda leaning towards the Kodak. What do you guys think? If I were you I would go with Kodak zi8 but get it in a couple of mouth, it has had a lot of problems lately. it is better quality than the flip, but I do not think it is the best in low light. but no pocket camcorder has good low light. an SDHC card is a large capacity card you should get for it, than SD cards, which are equal, there is a slower card reader and will take longer for things when you take pictures of videos.

the only way I know to convert video to DVD would be if you recorded it on memory card. To connect the camera to the computer with the included USB cable and extract the video on the computer.
