Digital camera, which one should I buy? TZ5 or FX500? or something else?

I'm thinking of buying a new digital camera. I have one but it's too old, so I need a new one.

I'm looking at the same cameras, plus the Canon 870 IS, G9, and some compact Sony with aperture/shutter priority modes. (I forget which one) I'm leaning toward the TZ5 because of the zoom. High Definition Update - Paul Wheeler Interview

In July 2005, I wrote an e-zine entitled "High Definition When?" At that time, we saw little demand for HDCAM equipment, except some customers in the U.S. Seven months later, the situation has changed dramatically. We've added two Sony HDW-F900 HDCAM camcorder (Sony's top of the line HDCAM camera to the television and / Or cinema) to our warehouse in January 2006 because of rising demand and sees this as the beginning of a trend. And we have just made a reservation for a multi-camera shoot in March with six HDW-F900s.

BBC Drama and High Definition

One of my first questions to Paul was about the seemingly sudden leap in demand for HDCAM. Paul's answer: "Five years ago the BBC said in two years everything they record will be in high definition. Three months ago they said everything that we record about two years will be in high definition to try to predict what will happen is very difficult. BBC, who wanted to go in this direction has not moved as quickly, they wanted to. But it is not a technical problem. It is a problem to convince manufacturers that use a new technology is safe. Sky TV and High Definition

Sky TV has also said that they are on track with plans to launch HDTV in 2006. Paul says the increased use of HD in documentary and factual programming has been stronger than in drama. "We've had several factual programming produced in HD, than we have had drama, and I think the main drive is the fact that you can sell it around the world. You can only really sell drama, if you did it in England to an English speaking nation, but you can change the comment to all factual language very easily, and I think there are more opportunities for international sales of documentary work or factual therefore these benefits of transparency to move from what you've shot on to what you want to sell it, is an even bigger advantage. "

Sony HVR-Z1 (HDV) vs. Digital Betacam

The most popular high Definition Camcorder Sony HVR-Z1. This is designed for low-budget shoot, and the camera has replaced Sony DSR-PD170P. The biggest advantage is the Z1 has a wide-screen chip it shoots true widescreen. The PD170P is a widescreen option, but because it has a 4:3 chip disadvantage of this approach results in images with Z1. Most of our customers record in DVCAM rather than HDV setting when using the Z1 and get good results.

In some articles I've seen relative to Z1 Sony DVW-790WSP camcorder with the conclusion that the quality of the image are the same. According to Paul: "If you take the output straight out of the Z-1 and stick it in a proper screen and do the same on the B channel with a Digi-Beta and you plunk between the two you can be fairly impressed. But there are other issues, why you choose a camera. One is the recording format and Digi-Beta format is much more stable and robust than the M PEG-2 compression used in HDV process. "What Paul says, is particularly problematic in post-production, especially if you make a" fair bit of post production. "

The other issue to consider is the lens and the actual robustness of the camera. Lens on Digi-Beta is much more flexible and quicker to respond than the lens on a Z1 and if you shoot even slightly negative compared to 790 are made of much Sterner stuff.

Paul's view, is to "think of (Z1) as a replacement for your PD170 but do not think of it as a replacement for the highly professional, very resilient, very strong absorption of Digi-Beta. It is not. "

Summary

High definition is definitely here. I've never seen a format starting so quickly. We saw a marked increase in demand January and interest and studies are growing. I recommend that you learn as much as you can on High Definition cameras available, the different settings you can shoot in and what accessories are often needed. July E-Zine covered much of this, Paul Wheeler, DVD covers more, and the next e-zine will cover commonly needed accessories.

One of the greatest challenges in working with today's smaller camcorders (with smaller chips) is getting a shallow depth of field for your shot. in my opinion, this is one of the major limitations of these cameras. since this is a well recognized problem, video professionals have come up with a variety of ways to handle this problem, which I will share here.

First off, if you have one of the higher-end cameras with a large diameter lens front (82mm or similar) there are 35mm lens adapter systems you can use that will cut down the light reaching the chips and make your depth of field more shallow. these are great if you can afford to purchase or rent them for your shoots AND if your camera is compatible with them.

The next common technique is to use the camera's neutral density filter or, for even more dramatic effect, add a neutral density filter to the front of the lens. these filters are designed to cut the amount of light reaching the chips and are generally rated with a number denoting how many f-stops you will have to open up to keep the exposure consistent with the non-filtered image. The higher the number, the darker the filter, and, the shallower your resulting depth of field will be.

The final, and less well known technique, is to increase the shutter speed of the camera. Generally speaking, each incremental increase in shutter speed will result in one less f-stop of light reaching the image sensors (or will require one more f-stop open to achieve the same exposure.) in situations where the other two options won't work, this is a great third option to have in your bag of tricks. The only caveat to this is that at a certain point (maybe 250th/sec) motion will start to have a very different look. While this might be great for certain things that have fast motion like animals, the same effect might look strange on other subjects (like in an interview where every detail of a person's blinking eye is now visible.)

Keep in mind that these tricks are limited to what can be done on the camera to limit depth of field. There are many other things that can be done in your environment (like changing a location or changing the lighting) that also play an important role.

As the video camera should I buy?

I want to buy one that is light weight, DVD-quality video, and preferably having a removable media type. (eg, DVD, etc.) Pls also tell me why. This question is model specific.

If you can find a Canon Elura 100, it is the one to get. It has a few mistakes, but the video quality is great and it has some features not typically found on entry level camcorders. Remember, it is a miniDV camcorder, which means to the tape recording. DV is a better format than DVDs and are much easier to edit. If you want simple and you are willing to trade quality for convenience, you can get a DVD (or HDD) camcorders. But be prepared to pay more, have less flexibilty in editing, and have lower overall video quality. The upside is that you can see what you have recorded almost immediately. Just pop the DVD out and play it in a normal DVD player ... well, not exactly, you still have to finish the first DVD. ft

The product arrived within a week and was in mint condition even though it was not in the original packaging. It was incredible well packaged, so there was no danger of damage during transport, and included in the handle strap, USB cable, video editing software CD, operating manuals, etc. But it had been shipped with the wrong power cable so I could not connect the device to recharge the battery, which meant in effect that I could not use the product.

I am thinking of buying a Sony HD camera - SR7. I was wondering if you can movie professional-looking quality film, as a start to video production. If not, how about using Sony Vegas? If not then can anyone recommend a camcorder in this price class that will provide good results. Thank You.

How do I split the video into Movie Maker, without losing the other half? Need Help badly?

OK, so I have this Insignia High Def Digital Camera with a video camera and everything. OK, so I recently filmed an entire movie, and had to edit it in Windows Movie Maker, except when I tried to split a clip in half lost the second half. The sound was fine, but the video did I do something wrong, or is it just suck, I tried to use my old computer with Windows 2002 or 2001 or such something and then my laptop with Windows 2008 Vista neither of them worked, I tried to reinstall the driver, and so much more

When you say video "went away "do you think it is not even on the timeline? If you use the Split Clip button in the Preview Monitor, both video and audio should remain in both halves of the original clip unless you delete the second half. If you think the video is still there, but it just looks black, I have had this problem as well. To resolve this, I save my project, close Windows Movie Maker, then open my project again. After restarting the program, I can see the video again for the second half of my clips. I do not know another solution, but it happens not for me, very often, so it's not a big deal for me. I think it could be a problem with the software, but it is more likely a problem with the computer you are using. I have this problem on my laptop (Windows Vista) but my PC (Windows XP) has a faster processor, more RAM and separate video memory and never gives me any problems. I hope this works for you as well!
