How do I transfer my videos from my Samsung digital camcorder models: SC-D353 to my computer?

I have a USB cord and plug it into my computer. It tries to install but fails. I have no disk. Is there somewhere I can download it? Runs on Windows Vista

Samsung SC-D353 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. ALL miniDV tape based camcorders from all manufacturers, download video the same way. Your computer must have a firewire port. USB is used only for transferring stills from memory card (perhaps for the USB power - most camcorders can not do this). Laptops typically use PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot desktops use PCI slots. Firewire, i.LINK, IEEE1394 and DV are all the same thing. USB will not work. Although some miracle you manage to get USB streaming work, video quality transferred will not be DV (or HDV, if your camcorder has this feature). USB-firewire converter / adapter / cable thing will not work. Three alternatives: 1) Get a second computer that has a firewire port. 2) Get an external drive and borrow a computer with a firewire port. Save the imported video to the external drive, disconnect and then connect to your computer. 3) Get a "Analog / digital bridge" that connects via USB. Pinnacle Dazzle makes. Video quality will be reduced - but not as bad as the USB streaming.

These are really useful systems which compress information to make it smaller and thus save space ultimately on your computer hard drive.There are many different types;WinZip/7Zip and many more.With many of these you can get a free trial (usually 30 days or more) before they ask you to buy the product.I personally use RAR which is a German produced file system and am very happy with it.One key factor is that whichever file compressor you use you nedd to use one which will be compatible with a few other different file formats.Some companies offer more compatibility than others.I paid about 30 dollars for my RAR file system and it works great with many different files types for me on a windows Vista.For example it allows me to compress 200 e-books which i now have on a cd-rom thanks to the compression possibility.

Some basics:-

Try to make sure you have some basic programs installed on your computer such as ADobe Acrobat Reader which allows you to open and read PDF downloaded documents off the internet.For example most free e-book downloads/reports come as a pdf file for instant download so you should have this already.If you don't you can just go to the Adobe homepage and you should be able to download it for free.As for many programs a company will often offer a  trial version of a program for free.

More expensive programs such as Dreamweaver (advanced webdesign) will not be free though.I know a lot of people willl know this already however i am trying to keep the complete newbies in mind.

As for computer security/anti-virus software I would recommend Kaspersky.I used to use Norton for a while until i heard from a serious computer tecchie friend of mine that it's not the best.McAfee is good aswell.Just remember some computer stores may offer you free computer anti-virus software when you buy a pc from them,yet it will not neccessarily be the best,and do not neccessarily believe verything you are told in a shop!Sometimes staff may be a little naive themselves and/or just chasing a commission by selling something to you.It is good to test everything! Always ask questions,and as many as you like!

You can get free anti-virus software instantly downloaded from the net such as AVG:however as i said i would personally recommend Kaspersky: and don't forget if you are going to be plugged into the internet you must have a reliable anti-virus/firewall protection set up on your computer otherwise you are asking for trouble after a while.

A tracking cookie is when a company's site plants a small piece of text in your web browser.Some tracking cookies can have a life of 3 or 4 months,some longer.They allow a companyies website to track and analyze user data, i.e.how often someone might visit their site,and what they might buy.Cookies are neither maliscious or spyware,but they may slow down or affect a users web browser.

So when you have a program like Kaspersky,Norton 360 etc, do try to learn a little about what you can use,how to use it and the difference between switching some functions on and off.Another reason why i mention this is because sometimes you may not be able to visit/open a site webpage if certain security program settings are switched on. 

I would also definately recommend running atleast the quick scan function on your computer at the end or beginning of each day.Last week Sky News reported a bug on Twitter (the social networking site) and in other words this could have affected the computers of thousands of people.These are reasons for looking after your pc or mac.

Video Programs:-

I would use a firewire cable if appropriate to the equipment though because the quaility will be so much better.Remember pc and macintosh AND the cameras can have different connections and cable types.You may also need a video card in your computer if there's not one already.

If you have a macintosh computer,most come with the basic imovie( high definition) software,which actually is very very good for what it is.On a pc with windows you should get a very basic video editing program called windows movie maker.I don't use it but i do know that it can provide the basics of assemble editing.If you wish to become really good at video editing i recommend avid,finalcutpro,or adobe premiere.

However it will,if you are new to serious video editing,take you a while to get good at these programs if you are starting from scratch.As i said the imovie program on the mac is perfect for beginners.There are numerous other cheap video editing software tools out there if you don't want to spend that much money.You have adobe premiere elements/corel video studio pro x2/roxio creator 2009/ uleadvideostudio 11 plus.These are some of the cheapest which you may find in a store.

There are also great dvd making programs by Roxio,Nero,Sonic, and idvd for mac.If you want to get more serious with dvd creatiion on a macintosh there's dvd studio pro.Also remember that there are lots of great videos on YouTube which you can watch and learn how to use various programs.

Publishing a video to YouTube:-

When you feel happy wiath an edited video and want to upload it to say Youtube for example:first you will need to open up a free account with Youtube.You can only upload videos which are no longer than 10 mins and 1gigabyte in size.There are also recommended resloution sizes which are 640X480 and a frame rate generally of 30 frames per second to get the best results.

If you are new to all of this do not be freaked out! All you have to do is click on the help section in your web browser help page to find the exact results you are looking for to upload your video correctly.Most public video upload sites such as youtube are just recently cracking down on copyrighted music.It is not likely that you will be sued!However they may well remove your video abruptly if you use music which is obviously not your own!

Remember nearly every video site only allows a limit of ten minutes for a video and a lot of these sites have different file size requirements -so check these files first before exporting a file from a video program for the net!

When you are filling in a description of your video don't forget to add tags to it and tags which are relevant.This will help others to find your video more easily.

I can see miniDVD on standard DVD and the computer itself, which is nice, but I can not burn miniDVD to a second DVD. I really want the info on the disk in your computer, so I can do this.

Go with MiniDV. I work with MiniDV everyday life, because it is actually better clarity and also with the tape vs. disk you get half an hour more on Standard Play. Sure theres the luxury of seeing disks when they are finished, but if you think about it, you see things that can be easily edited with a DV camera. It can be a pain in the butt at first, but it's fun, and when finished with editing, you can see the whole movie in one without having to worry about fast forwarding or skipping some useless stuff. Read the specs on Canon's product page or download the video camera's manual. Yes, the ZR900 has a MIC jack, then certain conditions you want to get the microphone closer to the source and not 2 inches away from the camcorder's tape drive. That, and ZR930 are the least expensive miniDV tape based camcorders with a MIC jack. When you connect an external microphone, it turns the internal microphones automatically. Yes, you will be able to record sound straight out of the box. Neither the ZR900 or ZR930 has an accessory shoe, so if you want to mount an external microphone to the camcorder, you can use a camera mount with a cold shoe or two. If you plan to incorporate REALLY LOUD or really low sound you must know that ZR900 (like most action-and mid-level camcorders) uses "Auto Gain Control (AGC), and there is no manual audio control. I have a Sony Handycam that uses mini DV tapes, and iMovie says I have to have a FireWire connection instead of USB, and everything I have is a USB cable. Should I buy another cable, or I can even import video at all? The only plug-ins on the camera is USB, A / V Out, Lance, and one that says DV. Thank you!

What is a good video camera to film skateboarding with for under $500? Panasonic GS250?

I have come to the conclusion that mini-dv is the best format to capture action sports like skateboarding and I am looking for one of these camcorders now. On ebay, the Panasonic GS250 sells for approximately $225-$250 and it seems like a good camcorder for the price. It is 3ccd and supposed to be quite good quality for its price range. Do you think this would be a worthwhile purchase for my purposes of filming skateboarding?

Are there any other camcorders you would recommend in this price range? The main flaw of this camera is that it isn't fantastic in low light, however not terrible. I really like the quality of the 3ccd though. What else should I consider/research?

I have a Panasonic PVGS 150. It's also 3CCD and mini DV, and it's great for filming skateboarding. I bought it off ebay for 175 bucks. I also bought a VX1000 that was in need of repair for just $290. Score, huh? I sent it in the Kerry at video electronics, and repair shouldn't be more than $100. Hopefully, haha. So if you can find a cheap, partially broken vx, definitely buy it.

I used a Panasonic camera when I film in school. I now own a JVC, which I am very satisfied. Canon is a great fire, but I do not have much personal experience with their camcorders. Any of these cameras would be a good choice for you. They are all priced fairly. Panasonic and JVC have both FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, but you will need get your own cable. Canon camera using USB and comes with its own cable. I would prefer FireWire for the longest time when dealing with MiniDV, but USB 2.0 is just as quickly. I personally use HDD instead of MiniDV now, but it is a bit expensive. Canon and Panasonic have better optical zoom than the JVC. They all Night Vision, image stabilization and manual focus. I would probably go with either Panasonic or Canon for the zoom, as the three are essentially the same. If you do not care about zoom (they are all decent anyway), I'd go with JVC and save $ 50.

camcorder/ final cut pro trouble!! PLEASE HELP??!!?

I filmed a school play on a Sony HDV 1080i mini dv camcorder, the first night the recording format was set to DV. I could not get the camera to connect to the Mac OS X computer but I put the tape into another, smaller/older Panasonic DV camcorder and I was able to connect the computer to this and managed to capture the tape. So on the second night of recording, I had the great brainwave :/ of switching the recording format to HDV 1080i as the quality would be better. Now I still can't get the Sony camera to connect to the computer and also the HDV tape won't play on the Panasonic camcorder. ANY way around this? Please help. This footage is to be used in DVD's for the school so I'm REALLY stuck. I wouldn't mind if it was just for me but it's not :/

You have lots of issues going on here... And for anyone reading this: This is why you practice and make sure everything works BEFORE you tackle a project. Especially with equipment hat you are not familiar with. And, that does not mean only capturing the video but the whole process - capture, importing, editing, rendering... not to mention audio and all the other stuff.

You did not tell us which Mac or what version operating system. We need to know that before we can understand why the HDV camcorder does not want to talk to Final Cut.

You did not tell us which Sony miniDV camcorder - it should not make a difference, but it is important to know in case we need to explain how to reset stuff.

The DV format video is common to ALL DV camcorders, so I am not surprised the Panny can ready the standard def video captured by the Sony.

HDV format is common to all HDV camcorders - but camcorders that do DV - standard definition only (apparently like the Panny) cannot deal with HDV format video - so this is no surprise.

Was the DV format video shot in 4:3 aspect ratio (more like a square video of a regular TV screen) or in 16:9 widescreen? The HDV format video is 16:9 - that is part of the definition of high definition video, that it is widescreen. With any luck, the Sony camcorder was optioned to shoot in DV widescreen... If you want to combine 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio video you will either have black bars somewhere or you will need to digitally zoom (in Final Cut you "scale" the video) so the aspect ratios are more closely aligned. This means either the 4:3 is going wide or the 16:9 gets the left and right cut off and goes square - or you are planning black bars left/right or top/bottom. Mixing formats - that is, aspect ratios and/or standard def/high def formats is not a good idea.

For what it is worth, I use a Sony HDR-HC1 and HDR-FX1, I occasionally shoot in DV - but mostly HDV - and I do all my editing on Macs using Final Cut.
