Can anybody tell me about Canon ZR 900 camcorder?
Specifically, how's the sound? Is it like, a built-in microphone? I hear about how it has an external microphone jack, does that mean you must buy a separate microphone to plug into it to capture sound? Or will I be able to record sound right out-of-the-box? Any other info on the Canon ZR 900 will be much appreciated.
Not only the ZR900 has "a built-in microphone, it has a built-in stereo microphone. All video cameras has built-in microphones. The ZR900 included. Yes, the ZR900 has a MIC jack, then certain conditions you want to get the microphone closer to the source and not 2 inches away from the camcorder's tape drive. That, and ZR930 are the least expensive miniDV tape based camcorders with a MIC jack. When you connect an external microphone, it turns the internal microphones automatically. Yes, you will be able to record sound straight out of the box. Neither the ZR900 or ZR930 has an accessory shoe, so if you want to mount an external microphone to the camcorder, you can use a camera mount with a cold shoe or two. If you plan to incorporate REALLY LOUD or really low sound you must know that ZR900 (like most action-and mid-level camcorders) uses "Auto Gain Control (AGC), and there is no manual audio control. When you record video in a very tranquil surroundings, the AGC kicks in and listen to audio. There is a distinctive whirring noise, or it can record noise from the tape drive. In both cases it can be edited out later, so not a big deal. REALLY LOUD sound can over-power AGC and the result is clipping and very muddy sound - which can not be repaired after having been caught. When a camcorder has manual audio control AGC is bypassed and the above issues can be removed if manual audio control are used correctly. The least expensive camcorders with a MIC jack and manual audio control - which I am familiar with - The Canon HV30 and Sony HDR-HC9.
