I try to mount a camcorder on my boat and what I want to do is to have it to where I can get remote access rotating camera and off, and record or off. Let me also like the viewfinder screen to an external LCD display mounted on my dash. High Definition When?

High definition will inevitably become a widespread
if not Universal TV format. But it is not yet clear when that will happen. So it is also not yet clear when high definition camcorders will be routinely required for acquisition of non-fiction programs. With that in mind, this e-zine aims to give a little background information for high definition technology and Sony High Definition camcorders currently available.

High Definition Workshops
Procam Television runs workshops on High Definition technology. High Definition Formats and Camcorders
Before venturing into the world of high definition, it should be said that our UK-based clients primarily use Digital Betacam and DV Cam camcorders and we find minimal demand for HD Cam. Our American clients are using HD Cam more frequently than our British clients but Beta-SP remains the format they most commonly request.

Two High Definition Formats
To begin with, the future of high definition television is unclear. There are two HD formats considered for transmission. One is 720p (720 horizontal lines or rows of pixels in the image) and the other is 1080i (1080 horizontal lines or rows of pixels in the image). "P" stands for progressive scan and "i" stands for interlaced scanning, but more on this later. Panasonic produces video cameras that generate 720 horizontal Lines and Sony manufactures the camcorders that generate 1080 horizontal lines. European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has suggested for discussion using 720p for public service broadcasters, but says it does not mean that they support 720p as the standard HD format for transmission. Trade magazines say BSkyB plans to send both 720p and 1080i in a service that will begin sometime in 2006, although I was recently told 1080i may be the only format they use for transmission.

Sony 1080-line system has a clear advantage over Panasonic's 720-line system. Each picture contains more than two million pixels (1920 vertical lines x 1080 horizontal lines), compared with 900,000 pixels (1280 vertical lines x 720 horizontal lines) in an image from a Panasonic high definition camcorder. This gives a better picture. The advantage of the 720-line system, it takes less transmission bandwidth to transmit.

Now the difference between "interlaced" and "progressive" scan. These terms refer to the way television images processed for transmission.

Interlaced Scan
Standard Definition TV signals processed by the television sets in an "interlaced scan" format. This means that the screen first scans the odd horizontal image lines, or rows of pixels, the sequence from top to bottom (1, 3, 5, etc.). It then returns to the top and scans the even numbered lines (2, 4, 6, etc.). To sum up the full picture from top to bottom is first made with half the information there and half of it missing. So the missing information is filled in PAL standard, each of these two processes takes 1/50th of a second, so the whole process takes 1/25th of a second.

Progressive Scan
"Progressive" scan differs from interlaced scan of the image displayed on a screen by scanning each line (or row of pixels) in a sequence instead of an alternate to have it done with interlaced scan. In other words, in progressive scan, the image lines scanned in numerical order (1,2,3) onto the screen from top to bottom, instead of in an alternate order (lines or rows 1,3,5, etc ... followed by lines or rows 2,4,6). By progressively scanning the image on a screen every 25th in another, rather than "interlacing" alternate lines every 50: e of a second, a smoother, more detailed, image can be produced on the screen is perfect for displaying fine detail and are also less susceptible to interlace flicker.

As a facilities company, we move into the HD Cam market, but cautious. We have a Sony models but has not purchased any Panasonic products. It is only in response to what our customers have requested most. Below is a summary of each model and what it offers the lowest the highest price model.

Sony HVR-Z1P
This is a high definition camcorder, we recommend use immediately without exception. We bought 15 of them in February this year. It is an upgrade of the DSR-PD170P compact camcorder. The main reason for the strong recommendation is that the camera has a 16:9 chip so it shoots true wide screen images. It also delivers superior images.

Sony HDW-730S High Definition camcorder
The 730S is targeting mainstream television programming rather than film or high end television drama productions. It shoots through the interlaced function only and can be switched between 50i and 59.94i. Progressive scanning is not possible with the 730S. But if you do not need to use progressive scanning and recording for television, this camcorder produces excellent images and it gives you to record HD Cam on close to a standard definition budget.

Sony HDW-750p High Definition Camcorder
The HDW-750p offers a choice of shooting 25 frames per second in progressive scan mode (25P) to give your images a film appearance, or to shoot 50 fields per second interlaced (50i) to conform to PAL TV standards. The camcorder has a 2.2 million pixel FIT CCD, which is a step up from the IT-CCD in the 730S, and Advanced Digital Signal Processing (ADSP).

This is the top of Sony's high definition (1080 lines x 1920 pixels) camcorder range. The F900 allows you to shoot in any environment you wish. In progressive scan, it can shoot 23.98, 24, 25, 29.94 or 30 frames per second. In interlaced, it can shoot 50, 59.94 or 60 Hz. This means you can shoot for any standard anywhere in the world. If you shoot the film publishing that F900 is the only Sony camcorder that can shoot 24P (24 frames per second film standard).

Panasonic range includes AJ-HDC27 VariCam. This is a DVCPRO HD camcorder that offers variable frame rates, which can be adjusted from 4-fps to 60 fps in one frame at a time at the touch of a button. The question we have about Panasonic high definition camcorders are not going from 625 lines offered by current PAL standard definition cameras to 720 lines offered by Panasonic's high definition format really merit the investment required in acquisition and post production equipment? Camcorder Recordings - another question about downloading OTHER THAN on DVD?

I want to save all my camcorder footage. I have already saved on DVD, but would like a backup, just in a smaller storage medium. ie SD memory card or the like. My camcorder is the new version of Sony - Handycam DCR-SX30E. I have found that after burning to DVD, I wish to add to the DVD (with DVD-RW), so it will not let me add additional recordings without erasing what already on DVD. I therefore have to save up enough shots to do at once, otherwise I have to spend lots of DVDs, and even cheap enough, I would rather have my recordings all on one DVD. As I save as much footage as I can on my laptop it would help if I could save it in instead of some other media as mentioned above, so I can unlock my laptop memory. Any ideas on what backup on other than an HDD external drive? I am so want to save this for future posterity, just in case something would happen to any of my DVD movies. If you choose to use a flash drive and then in a few months decide to look at the data and gone, it will be gone, you will not be able to regain it, how ever you try. The built-in light of Canon HF M30 is the flash if it is necessary to take still pictures. But you can buy an add-on video light. Video light is okay for issues close to cam, as in say 10 feet, but they are just not strong enough to illuminate than that. The camera has a 37mm lens filter thread so you can add an extra lens. Is there a way I can record / Dub scenes from movies on my computer?

What I'm not trying to do is out & out movie / piracy ..... I'm just trying to make a "favorite movie scenes" video on my computer, which displays a collection of some of my personal favorite movie scenes / lines through the years. (I'm a certified movie nut!) I try to DUB a VHS or DVD using my new Canon camcorder to a digital format ... and looked at my computer to edit it all together .... but I get the message that says "copyright" or something like that. Anyway to bypass this thing? Again ,.... i not look at it as a kind of "piracy" .. cuz it's my own personal use, entertainment ...... not out to make a profit or something .... just for fun! Two ways to do it. 1. Get a DVD drive to your computer and use DVD ripper software to save disk as a file. But it seems not to VHS, which means that you need # 2: A PC TV tuner card. They can be either externally or internally, but you basically run your RCA cables or coaxial straight into it and then record on your computer. Apart from these, customers can run into problems. Some tape recorder smaller units are not compatible with anything but Windows, so consumers should be sure to check the information before you make a purchase.

Well, I never seen her in 2 years now, last time I saw her, her hair was shoulder length, and she is Malay, honestly, she loves to smile, but she never smile in pictures, and she never show her teeth either. I know I know, stupid right. I just started to take the whole movie thing and I wanted to know how you get to see. I tried to put it to cinemode spots, but it looks pretty much the same. I hear someone talk about shutter speed but I dont know how to do it on the camcorder. I've seen a lot of test shots, and none look like mine, some are using adapters and filters, but I've seen some not, and it looks great. Can someone help me out here? Thank you!

You can also buy a DOF adapter (but it is expensive) to get a narrow DOF, a selevtive focus, so to speak, which allows you to manipulate what the frame is in focus .... Or you can simulate that by zooming all the way and open the iris to the max aperture (eg F2 or something) .. Just be careful, it will be difficult to keep solid. filters? yes, I think some Neutral Density filters can help ... ND filters just make the image darker without compromising resolution or color, so theoretically, it would allow you to get a better DOF outdoors by allowing you to open your iris more. (it will compensate for the increased amount of light you let into the lens by opening the iris, if you choose to manipulate the DOF, as explained in the previous section) Hope that helps:)

What is the best HD prosumer camcorder on the market today?

I've been searching through various camcorders for some time, yet new ones are coming out and I've been a bit lost. Does anyone have comparisons of the best HD prosumer camcorders on the market? Or which they think is the best?
well I'm fairly new to this, but I am getting into wedding videography.
My budget is up to 4 grand for the camera.
I'm also looking into live tapings of various bands. So in essence, i need a good all around to work in these situations. I would like a cinematic feel to the wedding videos, not necessarily with the live bands. I have been interested in the Canon XH A1 for awhile, but I simply don't know many other options. Thanks for your help.

I like the Sony HDR-FX1000 for low light or general use. If I need something small, the Canon HV40 or Sony HVR-A1 with the XLR adapter removed. For a shoulder mount, the Sony HVR-HD1000.

Even at 24 mbps, there is no AVCHD camcorder that matches or exceeds HDV's 25 mbps data stream.

Hi, I'm looking to invest in a higher grade consumer camcorder (shoulder mount) and I found a shop in my area that offers two cameras for around the same price. The JVC GY-HD200U and 250U are shoulder-style camcorder, which resemble large professional broadcast cameras, only a bit smaller, making them the perfect solution to record Electronic News Gathering (ENG) and reality shows and looks like you're on a massive budget!

I first used the JVC GY-HD200U when working on a reality show in 2008, and I was amazed when I saw the footage on my HDTV, the picture was flawless with rich colors and a very good depth of field for a HDV camcorder. Because the camcorder is so long with most of the weight in front and back, which is spread over it gives a very pleasant shooting experience, so it's a very well thought out design.

Both camcorders can record in both NTSC and PAL formats on various interlaced and progressive frame rates, which makes this camera very compatible with all types of productions, and also for travel.

The JVC GY-HD250U and 200U records high-definition video on a regular MiniDV cassettes, but with the optional DR-HD100U Direct-to-Edit recorder, a hard disk workflow can be achieved while creating back-up material on digital tape.
