The DSR-PD170P does not come with any software program (page 9, user's manual).

Open Vegas.
Connect camera with FireWire cable.
Turn on camera in Play mode, Playback.
You should hear that 'burlp' sound from your computer, same sound you hear when you connect something to the USB port, like an iPod, etc. If not, pull cable out and stick it back in. Try both the camera port and computer port. Sometimes the connections can be a little loose.

If Vegas doesn't 'find' the camera (device), from the capture camera choices, try choosing another camera. You might have to use a generic one. That is okay as long as it works. I have an old Canon 450i camcorder, but have lost the software that came with. Shops trying to charge me £ 25 per tape, so I reckon it's worth doing it yourself. But how?

I would suggest you get you a proffesional Mini DV (if thats the type you use) / DVD / HDV recorder. I had one in school. It was very easy to use to transfer recordings from a mini-DV to DVDs. It was also possible to transfer recordings and leave Hardrive (HDV). Im not sure which model it was, or who makes it, but you can search for it at online stores. It can cost you a bit, but I think it will be worth it. That way you can do it themselves and not depend on anyone. And it is something that lasts a while time, so you do not have to pay everytiome you want to convert anything.

Can I convert my VHS JVC camcorder tape to a DVD using my computer?

Office Depot offers a service to convert these tapes, but is quite expensive. Wondering if I can make it through my computer using a firewire. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

You can convert the VHS (or other analog sources) to DVD using a computer. There are several ways to do this. Firstly, to get a capture card for analog sources and record on your hard drive. Doing a Google search for opportunities. (Sorry Yahoo, Google makes a better site search!) Of course you must have a basic video editor program (to cut the gap between tape sections or edit content) and a program that can also burn a DVD. Some editors do not include a burning - like the free Windows Movie Maker on XP. Another way to save some money is to use your digital Comcorder's "Digital Passthrough" if it has this feature. My older Digital8 camcorder from Sony (DCR-TRV340) has this feature. You just plug the FireWire into your camcorder, plug the analog three plug the cord into the analog port on camcorder and switch the device to the VCR. (A very strange thing about this device is that in order to transfer streaming data to TV or VCR tape signal to the hard disk without admission to Hi8 tapes, I have to remove all tape from the camcorder. I would buy the iPhone this week, pretty excited! I know that the iPhone has some drawbacks as no Multimedia or video camera or bluetooth to other phones. via firewire its a motorla dvr 5 months on and I have Cox Communications. it has 2 FireWire ports on the back, and I got the correct cable to match the port and I tried to connect the camera to the I had the camera on VCR and it was not anything on the LCD screen! I tried the other port still nothing! I thought it would be so easy. the maual that came with said that it is just for audio and video equipment, a camcorder is perfect for it! is it possible that the port isn't active yet, though I think its supposed there is somethig wrong im doing? I just thought what I had on TV that it would be on the LCD screen on the camera. or maybe the only one to upload video to the DVR from your camera?
