They are both fine entry-level camcorders. No MIC jack. No manual audio control. Both use MiniDV tape, so that transferring video from tape to computer requires that your computer has a FireWire 400 port. Transfer using USB is supported not and will not work. USB / FireWire adapter / converters will not work. Lenses are of the same size, the imaging chip is about the same. Low light conditions to behavior camcorder in this entry level class will not be too good. HC52 has "Night Shot" mode (built-in infrared emitter for zero-light capabilities). Decent optical zoom (turn off digital zoom - it is useless in any camera). DV format video stored to minDV band is least compressed of available storage media, resulting in the best available video quality (compared to similar priced / featured hard drive, flash memory and DV-based camcorders). In both cases, if you plan to catch the loud sound (bands - Enhanced or not, big noisy crowds, engines, etc. ..), none of these camcorders behave properly - the high sound will exaggerate auto mic gain circuit and sound will be muddy and full of static. The resolution to this is to replace the video camera audio with audio recorded by a field recorder (M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol, and others) or have a camcorder with manual audio control (cheapest is the Canon HV30 or Sony HDR-HC9). There are a couple of Sony and Canon low-end camcorders that have a "loud sound" switch or menu choice, you can choose the bright environments to lower the MIC gain and reduce the high sound saturation ... But not all of them have it, so you must download and read your camcorder User Guide to check availability feature on the camcorder. Camcorderinfo.com has more detail (but I do not think they include the MIC gain "switch" information) ... otherwise, a coin flip works.
